70s DISCO Party TOP 20 Songs & Fashion Tips

When I was writing about hand jive, suddenly I had the urge to pull out all the TOP 20 DISCO PARTY songs from the 70s.Yes, let’s take a stroll back to the 70’s, where everything was groovy and vivid back then. Since I’ve to wait for the 20 songs to complete uploading, here are some tips on the 70s Disco Fashion, if I can remember it well. I remember those days where we have to dress-up or we won’t be able to enter into any Disco clubs. For the ladies and probably some guys too, the hot pants look and spandex tops were cool back then. To capture the lights from the disco balls, a gold lame, leopard skin and stretch halter jumpsuits and white clothes that glowed in ultra violet lights are a must. For the actual guys, stain jackets that reflected the light and a medallion resting on a tanned chest (hairs on the chest were accepted those days, it makes the guys look macho) in an open neck shirt with the collar turned up were de rigueur. If you don’t get it, just watch “Saturday Night Fever” and see the way John dresses. Oh yes, I almost forgot to mention the most important thing. You got to get a platform soled shoe because without them you won’t have the elevation of space age fantasy when your satin flared trousers shimmer as they swayed to the music beat. Actually, it’s so simple; just wear clothes which are unacceptable during the day. So put on your groovy clothes now, get your soled shoes on, deem the lights and switch on the disco lights (if you don’t have one, just get a torch light or a christmas twinkling lights will do) and boogie down to my TOP 20 DISCO numbers. Also don’t forget to watch John’s butt.

TOP 20 Disco Hits

Remember The Hand Jives

Last Saturday, I was at my cousin’s party and they started to play Otis's number, 'Willie and the Hand Jive'. Yeah baby, it was the HAND JIVES time!! And I got up and started showing-off my jives. While I was busting the move, a young chap approached me and said, “That’s a cool Macarena dude….never seen that before”. Macarena?!! What in hell was he talking about? Doesn’t he know I was jiving with my hands? On my way home, I thought, “probably I didn’t do it right”, and as soon as I got home, I grabbed my old “Grease” movie and started searching for the part where John and gang performed the hand jives. “Yeap, looks like I did ok”, probably those youngster need some lesson and realised this would be a great topic for my memories. So, here’s a minor lesson in hand jives.

History: Hand jives are set sequences of hand and arm movements performed mostly while sitting down in theatres that emerged in the 1950's. In particular it was done to Johnny Otis's number, 'Willie and the Hand Jive'. Alternatively, it could be "danced" by a bunch of teenagers grouped around the jukebox in a crowded 1950's diner or café. In this setting dancing with their hands only could also be a good idea because of the lack of room. Hand jive is a kind of dance game to Rock and roll and Rhythm and blues music in 1950s. It involves complicated patterns of hand moves and claps at various parts of the body, following and/or imitating the percussion instruments while sitting at the concerts or crowding around jukeboxes. It could also be a highly elaborate version of Pat-a-cake. Hand moves include thigh slapping, cross-wrist slapping, fist pounding, chest slapping and pounding, hand clapping, elbow touching, hitch hike moves, etc. and ITS NOT A MACARENA MOVE!!!

Ok here is how you do it.

Roll your hands to the left, your hands to the right.

Then beat out the rhythm on both of your knees.

Clap your hands a one and a two.

Put your fists together how I love you.

Cross your hands above and below.

Tap your right elbow, your left and then, All you do is start over again.

GOT IT! Still don’t understand….ok watch the actual jives by John and gang, and watch the song performance too. Guys guys guys...its a jive not a "hand jXb", come on do it right, ha ha ha.

Britney Spears (The Brat vs The King)

Couple of days back, I did an article about The King vs. The Killer and here’s the update version of The Brat vs. The King. Yeap, I mean Britney Spears. This will be one memory I will never forget or should I say one nightmare? Anyway, since she went “kojak” lets see what the future brings her. I feel The King’s looks don’t suit her. We need to recommend her a new look. Any suggestions, other than those below?

Gwen Stefani is the sartorial Midas: Everything she touches achieves style gold. A high-concept platinum 'do could impart a hipper-than-thou glamazon sheen on Brit-Brit's white-trashy pate.

Can the woman who sang "I'm Not a Girl, Not Yet a Woman" ever truly be street? Prolly not, but rocking a nappy 'fro featuring an artfully-placed hairpick a la the Roots' ?uestlove might nab her an award for Most Follicularly Creative. And that's something.

If Kelly Clarkson can find her way onto the emo-tastic Bamboozle Festival lineup, then surely Britney can get away with the close-cropped hipster style everyone sweats My Chem's Gerard Way for.

One way to make up for her piddling bubblegum cover of "I Love Rock & Roll"? Salute no-bullshit rocker Joan Jett with an appropriately ass-kicking hair 'do.

Better red than dead With all her recent antics, Britney would do well to channel her cuckoo behavior the way Tori Amos did -- with torrid confessional ballads and gorgeous titian locks.

Earthy British kook Imogen Heap is the thinking man's pop tart. With hair like this and a Madonna-style faux accent, Brit could usurp her title.

Sorry, I can't even think of a song for this article because my mind is trying to erase off those memories of once sexy brit.

Elvis is Alive – Strong New Evidence

I came across this clip in YouTube and believe it, The KING is alive, watch it here. What you think?

Great Guitarist

I am a guitarist and it was the first musical instrument I even picked up and started learning. The person who taught me to play my first 3 chords (C,F,G7) was my dad. Eventually, I ended up playing those old numbers from the 50s and 60s. He was a guitarist for his army band back then. I still remember the first song I played, Jambalaya. What a great song and still is, but it took me almost 3 weeks to learn the chords even though it was easy, just only 2 chords, but I was strumming like an idiot with no sense of getting anywhere, I was a dum-ass. Probably, I’m not a natural guitarist and had to slog as my fingers were stiff like planks. Oh, I still remember having those cuts on my fingers, really hurts and I almost gave up. But I was too determined to rock like those great guitarists, and gradually I started learning the guitar on my own after my dad gave-up on me. Probably he realised that I was hopeless. After so many years of struggling and suffering, today I think I am an acceptable guitarist, neither a professional nor an expert, but I am good enough to play for a band. I used to jam and did some gigs in clubs. Anyway, I still envy those great guitarists like Jimmy Hendrix, Eric Clapton, John Fogerty, Santana, Jimmy Page, Buddy Holly, Tony Sheridan, Hank Marvin…I better stop here because my list is endless. If you ask me what is my guitar niche and style? I would answer everything from “The Shadows” to the hard and lame rockers, to the deep and funky blues. Whenever I hear a great tab, I will eventually try to learn it regardless who plays those six strings. I better stop here, if I don’t, this will end-up being 20 pages long, but don’t worry, gradually I will tell you more about my guitar memories and how I ended up in gigs. I’ve included some video clips of the Great Guitarist here, so please enjoy it. Oh, how I wish to have their soul!! So ROCK away GREAT ones.

The King vs. The Killer: Who should have been KING?

Who is the real KING of ROCK n ROLL? Yeap, I am referring to the two legends, Elvis Presley the King and Jerry Lee Lewis the Killer. One is known to move like the devil and the other turned gospel into boogie-woogie and claimed to have sang for the devil. When I was young, through the influence of my parents, especially my mum, most of the time I was listening to Elvis, because my mum fancy him. When I got older, instead of Elvis, I started to fancy Jerry. I just love his musical style and expressions. Not for the scandal of him marrying his third wife, Myra Gale Brown, who also happened to be his thirteen-year-old second cousin, Jerry would have given Elvis a fight till “hell breaks loose” for the title “The King of Rock n Roll”. Someone quoted, "Elvis might have the title, but Jerry is King of Punk Rock. He is Punk Rock before Punk Rock". Well Jerry, I hope you are happy with the title “the killer” and I will always remember you as the raw and wild one. As for Elvis, the movies made you a product, but I still love you man. Hope you guys enjoy my video clip of both the legends.

The Queen of Booty Shaking

Whenever I watch all those booty shaking girls on MTV brings to mind how the legendry Tina Turner did it in the 70s & 80s. I proclaim her the “Queen of Booty Shaking”. To prove my point, I went digging for my old videos and I came across this clip of Tina shaking her booty with her energetic sexy back-up singers during the 70s. This is one of her best live performace. I like the way she moves and those wonderful legs. Isn’t that one of the sexiest pair of legs you ever seen from one foxy lady?! I hope you will enjoy this clip of her singing “Proud Mary”.

Why do Pirates wear Earrings ?

As promised, here is the article I read about pirates wearing earrings. This article was written and submitted by Lauren Kuehl of Levittown, Pennsylvania. Thanks also to Amy Kelly of Cleburne, Texas, and Douglas Watkins, Jr., of Hayward, California. I always thought pirates wore earring because of the cute babes, never knew it’s more towards improving their eyesight. Don’t know if medically proven. Anyway, if your eyesight sucks, get earrings, because now you might have a more reliable excuse.

Before we start reading this article, do you think Adam Ant looks like a pirate? He was kind of trendy back in the 80s, but you would never see me looking like him, because the pirate look seems a little nutty. He had some cool songs. Check out one of his song I posted at “the article box”. Whenever I hear this song, it reminds me of “Adam the wanna be pirate punker”!

Why Did Pirates Wear Earrings?

A famous portrait of Howard Pyle's depicts the notorious Captain Kidd, clearly wearing an earring. And movie pirates usually don them, too. Did they wear them in real life?

Evidently so. Our resident pirate expert, Toby Gibson (librarian and historian, who has made a lifelong study of pirates) writes:

"While I'm sure Hollywood was trying to make leading men such as Errol Flynn and Douglas Fairbanks, Sr, look suave and exotic, real pirates were piercing their ears for a more practical purpose. It was believed that piercing the ears with such precious metals as silver and gold improved one's eyesight. This was the main reason pirates performed such a ritual. It must also be noted that most other seafaring men also indulged in this practice.

"While for years this was considered an old wives' tale, today the art of acupuncture lends some credence to the practice of ear piercing. The earlobe is an acupuncture point for several eye ailments. It is quite possible that the practice of ear piercing may have been brought to the West from the Oriental trade routes."

History confirms that pirates increasingly worked Asian waters after the Caribbean and "New World" prospects "dried up" in the early to mid-eighteenth century. This would also explain why the graphic depictions of pirates in the earliest books we described in the previous chapter do not picture pirates sporting earrings.

We decided to speak to some acupuncturists, to determine whether practitioners, then and now, believe in a relationship between piercing the ear and improved vision. When we asked Dr. Steve Given, an acupuncturist who also teaches the art at Emperor's College in Santa Monica, California, he gave us a shock. We asked him about the ear-eye connection, and before we could broach the subject, he brought up pirates:

"There are reports of people enjoying vision improvements after having their ears pierced. In fact, when I studied acupuncture, the subject of pirates piercing their ears just for this reason was discussed."

Given doesn't dispute that pirates pierce their ears for this reason? He discussed how the ear is often used in acupuncture, as a focus point for eye problems in general, and vision problems, in particular. A point on the ear, called the "eye point" or "vision point" corresponds to the area on an earlobe where piercing might take place. But he doubts that any lasting vision improvements could be attained from piercing:

"If they did get a benefit by puncturing the master sensorial [yet another name for the "eye point] in a fortuitous manner, it certainly wouldn't be a lasting thing. Once the ear is pierced, scar tissue forms around the hole. This will block any further beneficial effects."

Given's arguments were corroborated by two other acupuncturists we consulted. Timothy Chen, of the Acupuncture Clinic of Pasadena, told IMPONDERABLES that he has found nearsightedness and conjunctivitis to be conditions helped by acupuncture on the ear, but doubted whether piercing could help general vision, on a long-term basis. Dr. Michael Apelian, of the Acupuncture Therapy Centre in Santa Monica, has heard of cases of vision being harmed and helped by ear piercing:

"I've heard it go both ways. I've also heard because you're damaging that area by piercing, it can inhibit vision. I think that most of the more ancient beliefs (and Chinese literature) felt that it would stimulate vision rather than hinder it."

We asked Dr. Apelian if he treated people on the ear for vision problems:

"Sure. However, I think that other body points, especially on the face and feet, are stronger."

Maybe pirates pierced their ears and feet, too. But it would be hard to find rings underneath the bushy beards and salty footwear.

Still remember those earring years

The finest reason of being young is to have the opportunity to discover many fresh and unique fashions. When I was a young man, I was way too contemporary, and one of the most fashionable things I ever did, probably one of the stupidest or the craziest, was the moment I pierced my own ear. Yes, I did it by myself with a pine needle. If you are wondering, yes it was one hell of a painful experience. Don’t do it yourself unless you are desperate, like I was.

I think the trend of men’s ear piercing started through the influence of the most influential punk rocker, Billy Idol. His songs like “Rebel Yell” and “Mony Mony” together with his musical videos played a big part in changing “how men should express and display their appearances”. He was so trendy back then during the early 80’s, and like him, I was one of those young punks, trying to make a statement about my tastes in fashion and more importantly, about myself. I feel, Billy’s songs (music) are very influential and moreover if you listen to his music, you will get a rebellious feeling. Listen to both of these songs (located at "article box">>>>) you will know what I mean.

Before I continue my story, what’s about the left and right ear? Till today, no one have really come forward to set the standards right. Some people claimed that men’s sexuality is determined by which ear he places his earring. In England, if a man wears his earring on the left ear, he is a gay, whereas in Canada, gay-men wear it on the right. I think with all these confusions, men nowadays decided to pierced both ears, and frankly I am now more confused then ever. Does anyone have the right answer?

Ok back to my story. I pierced the “left side” because I felt rebellious, and I needed to be trendy, moreover trying to be cute for the girls. But, did I look sissy? Maybe at first, but eventually society understood that men felt the necessity to make their outward appearance like women, like those women who make their outward appearance like men. Does that make sense?

One thing I am sure most religion forbids this act, but some do encourage it. How about pirates? Do we prescribe ourselves morally like them or are we following their trend too? I read somewhere which explained why pirates wear big earrings and I will post it in my next article.

Many parents object to their sons wearing earrings, including mine. My dad was so furious when he discovered my pierced ear. Subsequently, I had to remove it and eventually after a few days the hole closed and that’s the end of my trendy ear. If you ask me now if I regretted not keeping it, well, frankly I am glad my dad “kicked me arse”, because as I got older the desire of being trendy mellowed down, and I realised, back then, I was just a silly kid. As for Billy, he will always be my idol and I will always remember him for that “almost hole in the ear".

Listen to Sassy Songs from the 80's

Sassy!!

The music from the 80’s is awesome. Even though the 80’s are way behind us, we still can hear those sassy tunes frequently played in clubs and radios. It also reminds me of the era where we had some fashionable clothes and hair styles. I think the 80’s played a part in the Gay-man/woman’s revolution. What you think? I will tell you more about my memories in my upcoming posts which relate to this compilation. So come on, get sassy with my songs.

Music Music Music Music, Songs and Memories rhymes

Hi everyone, a warm welcome and thanks for dropping by to share my memories through music, regardless if they are those heartbreaking or joyful ones. I feel there is always a song(s) to harmonise with any reminiscences. One of Nirvana's most memorable songs, “come as you are”, by the late Kurt Cobain, sounds right for this weblog. You can hear the song at the “Main Menu – Article Music” and I will always remember this weblog through these words…

“Come as you are, as you were, as I want you to be.
As a friend, as a friend, as an old enemy.
Take your time, hurry up, the choice is yours, don't be late.
Take a rest, as a friend, as an old memoria...
Memoria...
Memoria...
Memoria....”

Please bear with me, as I am still working on this weblog. By the way, you can call me Ed, your disk jockey (more appropriate, blog jockey), moreover your entertainer for the next couple of hours. Don’t worry, I am not a psychiatric, and please don’t ask me to cure your brain, cause I might make it worst. I am just a plain old Joe!

Let me tell you how I started this weblog. After many months of laziness, finally, one shining day, I found the time and effort to produce this blog. Litterly, I had to pull my big fat arse, more like dragging it to the PC. By the way, I haven’t been to bed for the past, 28 hours, 32 minutes and 10 seconds. Oh god! I am “sleepless-high-out” and my eye feels like popping out and it starting to look like a gold fish. So, please forgive me if I am writing craps. I know my fingers are typing on something, but my brain is doing those lap-dances, more like cha-cha, no! more like rumba…ah whatever!

I got held back searching for the best free design for this weblog. Sorry, I am cheap. For hours, I’ve been browsing the net, but the choices were so limited. Eventually, I came across some good ones, but too bad, it can’t be applied. Don’t ask me why, because I am still trying to figure it out. I hate those templates where you download and it turns out to be crap. What a waste of time! I presume you didn’t notice my slogan, or did you? I can’t figure out the dam codes to move the header a little bit to the right. Been trying to put that dam slogan inline (centre), but seems not to be happening. Anyone know where I’ve gone wrong? Looks like I got to live with it, but in a way the slogan looks unique like that. I think! What you think? does it? Ok, I better stop talking craps, and tell you more about this weblog. You better not be wondering off now.

Like I explained earlier, this weblog is my way of expressing and sharing the music which reminiscences those time when music had inspired, delighted and comforted me. Whenever I hear a song from the past, somehow it reminds me of something in my past, mostly a situation, someone, probably some ex’s, somewhere in time, my car, my dogs, my cats, my birds, my cow and… it goes on and on, with endless memories. Probably I am getting old. Well, I guess you get what I mean. It’s hard to forget when there is still music out there.

I love music! I was born to Elvis Presley & Cliff Richard’s songs, more like stumbled upon. When I was a little cutie and cuddly baby, my loving mother will constantly “blast” her favourite Elvis numbers so that I would fall asleep. Just imagine, Elvis singing “Jail house rock” for a lullaby song. What in hell was she thinking!? Anyway, I turn out alright, only some minor damages to the left side of my brain. Eventually, it didn’t help me to sleep because the music was too good and I started rocking to it. Not rock n roll, but actually rocking in my crib. Realising this, my mum decided to change the music to Cliff Richard, but I am still rocking. Eventually, she decided to play the good old Slim Whitman. Guess what! Naturally, I feel asleep. Don’t get me wrong, I love the old Slim, not that I dislike his music. Slim’s songs are so relaxing and it gives you a wonderful twinkling feeling to shut both your eyes and float with the tune, eventually you will fall asleep. When I was a young teenage rebel, I was one of those 80’s freaks, with Duran Duran and Spandau Ballet posters stuck all over the back of my room-door, not forgetting Madonna, and I adore INXS. At that time, we didn’t have music or video CD’s or cable TV (MTV), we only had LP’s and carbon tapes (dam expensive), but whatever it takes, one way or another, we will find those songs. I remember arguing with the “VHS-Video-Rental” shop assistant to get the latest “Top of the pops” weekly series, too bad she was also a teenage like me.

If you want to listen to some of the songs I enjoy, just go to the main menu (on your left) and click on those various colour boxes. There are about 60+ songs for the listening pleasure of everyone. You are welcome to listen but sorry mate, no downloads. I will frequently remove / post new songs and make different interesting compilations. I do get bored sometime, listening to all my songs; therefore, I've placed an empty box (in pupple) in here so you can upload and share your song(s) (MP3) for my listening pleasure. The login id = mymusic_mymemory@yahoo.com and password = music4u. You can also email me at the same address if you want me to post stories of your memories. If you have your own weblog, please write and post your memories there. Don’t forget to link it to me. So, have fun with my 60+ songs, which will take you about 3+ hours to finish listening. Cheers, for Music Music Music Pop Pop Rock Rock Country Country Music Music Music.

Note: All these songs and videos are my personal collections from years of purchasing CDs, VCDs and DVDs. They are for the listening pleasure of my friends and myself, thus, sorry I don't provide FREE downloads.
